ABOUT
2022 June 16 – 25, Monday – Saturday, 12:00-18:00, June 25 closes at 17:00
Artists use their canvases to enhance an abstract subject to its fullest potential. Three
artists contemplate the textures of their media to build connections and conversation in
each theme. Using purposeful materials and layered compositions each artist tends to
create deeply meaningful works that breathe life and experience into each piece.
We hope you will enjoy viewing the profound world of these three artists.
● Jasmine Fulford is a Japanese-British artist who focuses her work on pictorial scenes of
people, places, and things. She primarily uses oil paints to convey in her works the
textured joy of various scenes whether they be interior spaces or portraiture. In her
recent work, Fulford has been focusing in particular on themes that appear to viewers
as understandable concepts, but are in fact difficult to grasp.
Jasmine Fulford graduated from Musashino Art University with a degree in painting after
having focused on oil painting and printmaking, and holds an MA in Fine Art from
Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London.
● Palmarin Merges is a Filipina American artist whose work draws from the desire to
become more sustainable by re-using materials close at hand and by adapting
restriction as a generative force for creation. Trained as a Printmaker, she now works
primarily in mixed media, especially household waste – plastic, cardboard, etc. These
common materials taken from the fabric of her daily life are processed and then
transformed into pattern, collage and concrete poetry.
Palmarin Merges holds an MFA Printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute and
has exhibited in Japan, the Philippines, San Francisco, and Portland, Oregon. She has
previously taught Relief, Screenprint and drawing at Pacific Northwest College of Art,
Marylhurst University and Pacific University.
● Mia O is a South Korean artist, currently living and working in Tokyo, Japan. In 2003,
she participated in the Nagasawa Art Park Artist-in-Residence program, run by the
Mokuhanga Innovation Laboratory, and was introduced to the Japanese art form. Using
the traditional printmaking process which applies water based ink on handmade
Japanese washi paper, Mia O. modernizes the craft using geometric and linear shapes
to convey movement and transparency.
She received her BFA in Fine Arts from Hong-ik University, Seoul, Korea and her MFA
in Painting from Pratt Institute School of Art in New York. Her works have been
exhibited and collected internationally, including a purchase award by the Hawaii state
Foundation for culture and the Arts, Art in Public Places. and inclusion into the Kentler
International Drawing Spaces Flatfiles.
